Catholic Women in the Arts: An Underappreciated Tradition

Join the Catholic Artists Society on Tuesday evening, May 14, for a lecture by Dr. Bronwen McShea, author of Women of the Church: What Every Catholic Should Know.

Dr. Bronwen McShea is an historian and writer based in New York City and a Visiting Assistant Professor in History with the Augustine Institute Graduate in Denver. She is the author of Women of the Church: What Every Catholic Should Know (Ignatius: 2024), La Duchesse–The Life of Marie de Vignerot, Cardinal Richelieu’s Forgotten Heiress Who Shaped the Fate of France (Pegasus: 2023), Apostles of Empire: The Jesuits and New France (Nebraska: 2019), and many articles and reviews. Dr. McShea earned her Ph.D. in Early Modern History at Yale University and her M.T.S. in the History of Christianity at Harvard University.

Her lecture will feature and elaborate on some of the Catholic women painters, sculptors, and patrons of the visual arts in history considered in Women of the Church, including Plautilla Nelli, Emilie Linder, and Edmonia Lewis.
